Program Background: Crossing Borders to Redefine the Future of Healthcare

The world's first engineering-based medical school, the Carle Illinois College of Medicine at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), initiated the establishment of the Global Consortium for Innovation in Engineering and Medicine (GCIEM) in 2024.

Spanning 19 countries and bringing together 30 leading medical and engineering schools worldwide, the consortium connects industry, government, academia, research institutions, and investors. Its mission is to break down traditional barriers and accelerate the realization of medical innovation.

As a founding member of GCIEM, the College of Medicine at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) plays a central leadership role within the consortium. The university also shone at the inaugural Global Summit held in the United States in 2025, where three student teams represented NYCU in competition. Among them, the Da Vinci Robotic Arm Assistance System team stood out, becoming the only non-U.S. team to advance into the top five finalists.
