Jiufen Old Street
Jiufen is in New Taipei City's Ruifang District. Before its gold mining boom, the main economic activity was the harvesting and processing of camphor. Jiufen had 90 stoves for the camphor. Ten stoves were generally grouped together in a processing site. Therefore, over time these evolved into nine processing sites. The name "Jiufen" can be translated as "nine units" or "nine sections."
Jiufen used to be the center of gold mining. It is located within the hills in northeast of Taiwan. The village is next to the mountain and facing the sea. In 1890, someone struck gold near Jiufen. The poor village soon attracted prospectors of 4,000 families. The village once was gold city of Asia and called little Shanghai or little Hong Kong. However, with the decline of gold mining activities, Jiufen fades. Later, several movies chose to shoot here and the movies won international acknowledgement. For example, the film "A City of Sadness" has won first prize in Venice Film Festival and awakened people's memory of Jiufen. It seems that the prosperous old streets, buildings, mines and the glamorous gold digging days are flashing before our eyes. The place is whispering its golden past. Now, there are many unique teahouses in Jiufen. These teahouses are best stops during visit to this mountain village. Also, there is the beautiful ocean view of Keelung outer sea.
The most prosperous shopping district is Jiufen Old Street. It goes through most of the village. There are many visitors on the street. Along the street there are shops vending the most famous country snack of Jiufen, yam dish and various local dishes. There are some historical items well reserved. The trip to Jiufen is full of fun and delights. Jiufen has many accommodation places provided by local residents. If you were not in a hurry, you may want to pick a nice inn and stay for the starlight and fishing lights at night.

Nantou
Sun Moon Lake
Sun Moon Lake, located in the middle of Taiwan, with an elevation of 748 meters above sea level, is the only natural big lake in Taiwan. The southern part of Lalu Island is shaped like a new moon, and the northern part is shaped like a sun; hence the name Sun Moon Lake.
Scenic resources
The most famous sights around Sun Moon Lake are Ita Thao, Lalu Island, Xuanzang Temple, the Ci-en Pagoda, Wenwu Temple and so on. The natural forests bordering these roads are good places for bird watching. There are a lot of birds that live on the mid-elevation, such as the Grey-cheeked Fulvetta, Grap-throated Minivet, Formosan Yuhina, Gray Tree Pie, Bamboo Partridge, Chinese Bulbul, Muller's Barbet, and the Black Bulbul.
Colonies of Black-crowned Night herons, Egretta garzettas, and birds, such as the common kingfishers and the Green-winged Teasl can be seen at the Dazhuhu water reservation, situated around the water gate. Besides these birds, fish, insects and wild vegetables are flourishing in the region as well. These are all natural resources of the Sun Moon Lake region.
The Shao Clan is the earliest clan that lived in the Sun Moon Lake region. The Harvest Festival, Sowing Festival and their special handicraft fair every year, as well as their articles have helped to preserve the particular culture of the Sun Moon Lake region.
Xiangshan Visitor Center
Xiangshan Visitor Center is both for tourism and administration use. The uniquely designed building has wood-patterned exteriors and wings that stretch like human arms embracing the earth. In addition, the two giant canopy structures, 34 meters long and 8 meters tall each, allow people to enjoy beautiful views of Sun Moon Lake from the top.
Xiangshan Café
Xiangshan Café offers lovely views of Sun-Moon Lake and has a distinctive feature which is the internationally-renowned avant-garde building designed by a Japanese architect; the nearby round-the-lake trail is complete and becomes a favorite scenic spot for cyclists; adding to its appeal are the building's lights that by night create a totally different and breathtaking scene and style. Interior design was carried out after discussions with Norihiko Ddan and Associates and also with the assistance of Professor Zhang Zi-long of National Taiwan University of the Arts, the aim being to create a simple-but-fashionable café with a modern style, with the main color of the building being white to match the building. The main bar combines glass and light elements, creating a pleasant visual effect. The shop area has an open layout and overturns the disorderly impression that shops often give, increasing the feeling of space and having a simple style. The seats are high-class with a pronounced design feel and the clever use of lights adds interest to the indoor space; as for the outdoor seats, the bright colors create a rich and lively visual effect. The "exterior beauty" of the café alone is captivating; getting to know its "inner beauty" is a really good reason to visit Xiangshan Café when you visit Sun Moon Lake.

Hualien Changchun Shrine Trail (Eternal Spring Shrine)
Taroko became a national park in 1986, including Hualien City, Nantou County and Taichung City. Taroko is famous for its spectacular mountains and marble canyons. Cliffs and canyons stretch along Liwu River. Four million years ago, the island of Taiwan was formed by the collision of plates. After millions of years of wind erosion, the marble rocks were exposed and cut by Liwu River, creating impressive grand canyons. From Qingshui to Nanhu Peak, the drop height is 3,742 meters. Such special geography has also bred special flora and fauna in this area.
The waterfalls characterized Taroko National Park and the most famous ones are Baiyang Waterfall, Yindai Waterfall, Changchun Waterfall, and Lushui Waterfall. Swallow Grotto (Yanzikou) and Tunnel of Nine Turns (Jiuqudong) are the most impressive natural scenes in Taroko and the canyons here are the narrowest. Tourists can appreciate the natural beauty along the tour track. Swallows nest on the cliff, chirping and flying back forth. The Taroko monumental is designed in Chinese style and Changchun Temple is to remember those who sacrificed their lives for building the central highway.
Tianxiang
The starting point of this trail is the tunnel that leads from the highway to the Changchun Temple. This is definitely a trail for those who don't mind exerting themselves; for although it is not long, it is extremely steep. Those who suffer from vertigo should probably avoid this trail as well, for it has an intimidating bridge-crossing, and part of the trail also follows a mountain ridge, which falls away steeply on either side. Reaching the highest point of the trail takes about 25 minutes of walking along a path that zigzags up a steep slope. The highest point is marked by a bell tower. Most people make this their resting point, but the very best views can be obtained from a point about five minutes further along, where all the grandeur of the mountain peaks and billowing clouds is revealed. From this point on, the trail leads downhill, a welcome rest for weary legs.
About 20 minutes along the trail is the Dongtian Xianfu, a cave shrine carved into the rock. Visitors can dimly see a statue of Buddha and Buddhist murals in the semi-darkness of the cave. To the left is Taroko Tower, half-hidden in the wild grass. The trail then leads on to Changuang Temple. From here there is a road back to the Central Cross-Island Highway from where hikers can return to Changchun Temple.

Hsinchu Persimmon Festival
Sweet Persimmons and Pears
The hilly terrain and dry climate of Xinpu create the perfect conditions for growing and drying persimmons. Fragrant and chewy, the township's dried persimmons are widely known and loved.
Pears are another trademark crop of Xinpu. The pear harvest begins to hit the market in mid-June but the best pears ripen around mid-July. Xinpu also produces Taiwan's last-harvested winter pears. The annual pear production of Xinpu Township is about 32,000 kilograms. They are sold at most supermarkets and can also be enjoyed directly from the rustic orchards of Xinpu.
Hakka Life and Temples
About 90 percent of the residents of Xinpu Township are Hakka. The ethnic composition is evident in the simplicity and work ethic of the people, as well as in the unique local architecture of the town. Many of the townspeople wake and retire each day with the sun, leading a life closely linked to the land.
Although the traditional culture and way of life of the Hakka people has ebbed with the decline of the agrarian economy in Taiwan, one can still catch a rare glimpse of this earlier life in at several well-preserved Hakka historic sites in Xinpu, such as the Liu Family Ancestral Shrine, Heping Street, and Shuangtangwu. There are also plenty of eateries in Xinpu serving up authentic Hakka cuisine with that old-time taste.

Alishan Forest Railway
Construction of the Alishan Forest Railway was commenced in 1899 by the Japanese. Intended to transport logs down the mountain, it has a 762mm gauge, a gradient of 6.25%, and a minimum turning radius of 40 meters. Traffic was opened on the 66.6-kilometer stretch between Chiayi and Erwanping in 1912, and was extended up Alishan to a full length of 71.4 kilometers in 1914. The railway climbs from 30 meters above sea level to 2,216 meters, has 47 tunnels and 72 bridges, and passes through a cross-section of climates and terrain types.
From Chiayi, the railway travels along relatively flat terrain for 14.2 kilometers before beginning the long climb, corkscrewing around Mt Duli, climbing 200 meters over a distance of five kilometers. The railway then travels on to Pingzhena Station. From here it zigzags up the mountain, reversing direction at each new section of line as it gradually ascends Alishan.
Intended to transport logs and carry supplies, the railway has now become an integral part of the Alishan recreation facilities. After the Alishan Express was established in 1984 (requiring 3 hours and 15 minutes for the complete journey), some of the carriages of the original trains were converted into hotel accommodation. A number of locomotives are also on display at the Old Railway Display Area located near Zhaoping Railway Station.

Tinan Chikanlou
Tainan Chikanlou is built by the Dutch in 1653. It was originally called Provintia. In Dutch it means eternity. The Chinese called the building "Chikanlou", "Fanzailou" or "Honmaolou". Although Chikanlou has gone through Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty and the Japanese Colonization Period, it basically still maintains its original look.
Chikanlou has been an administration center from the Dutch's occupation period. In 1661, when the Chinese General Cheng Cheng kung repelled the Dutch, Provintia was changed to be Chentien governor's mansion. In the early stage of Qing Dynasty when Taijiang River was still running, the tides could reach Chikanlou directly. "The sunset in Chikanlou " was one of the eight famous scenes in Taiwan. In front of Chikanlou there are nine sets of stone turtles carrying plates. There were made in Qing Dynasty and were removed from elsewhere to be located here. The legend says that the stone turtle is one of the dragon's nine sons. It shifted into a turtle because it loved to endure heavy objects. There is also a stone horse with broken legs. The legend says that the stone horse's legs were broken by force because it shape-shifted into a monster at night and harassed the residents. Later, Chikanlou declined due to damages caused by civilian upheaval and lack of management. Chinese style building was added to the original Dutch architectural body. For a time the place hosted the worship for Guanshiyin Budda. During the Japanese colonization period, Chikanlou was changed to be army hospital. There were some restoration and repair. After Taiwan was returned to R.O.C., the wooden structure was changed into steel concrete structure. The main entrance was changed. Thus they created the look of Chikanlou today.

The pond is most beautiful in the late afternoon, when the setting sun is reflected in the water. Nearby are the ruins of the Fengshan County walls and gates, which have been designated a first-grade historic.
Spring and Autumn Pavilions
Two massive pavilions dedicated to Kuan Kung, the God of War, the Spring and Autumn Pavilions were completed in 1951. In front of the pavilions is a statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, riding a dragon. According to legend, Guanyin appeared above the clouds riding on a dragon, signifying that believers must erect an image depicting this event between pavilions of summer and autumn: The present-day structures are a result of this vision.

Kaohsiung Dome of Light
Situated at the Kaohsiung MRT transfer station for the Red Line and Orange Line (Formosa Boulevard Station), the Dome of Light was created by renowned artist Narcissus Quagliata. The dome is the world's largest public art installation made from individual pieces of colored glass. The work not only adds to the beauty of the station, but also adds a new dimension to the art life of the Kaohsiung and creates a new scenic spot in the city.
The Dome of Light took nearly four years to complete. The work was overseen personally by Quagliata and shipped from Germany for installation at the station. The dome tells the story of human life in four chronologically arranged themes: Water: The Womb of Life; Earth: Prosperity and Growth; Light: The Creative Spirit; and Fire: Destruction and Rebirth, with an overall message of love and tolerance.
The dome has a 30-meter diameter and covers an area of 660 square meters. The lead glass panes were created and assembled according to a full-scale blueprint created by Quagliata to produce a creative new departure from this millennia old art form.

Xiaoliuqiu
Liuqiu is the general name of Liuqiu Island. It is only 6.8 square kilometers large, with a 12km coastline. The only offshore coral reef island of Taiwan, it is 14km southwest of Donggang Township, Pingtung County. Liuqiu is blessed with many tourist resources. Because is not influenced by northeastern monsoons in winter, this island can be visited all year round. Especially on chilly days, it is still suitable for travel. For its unique geological formations, Liuqiu has a diverse natural ecology and plenty of beautiful coastal views. The amazing rocks in different sizes and shapes make its scenery even more charming. People are simple and honest here. Temples are everywhere, and graceful old houses abound. A leisurely fishery village it is. There are no traffic lights at all on this island. Pace of life is slow and free. No big budget is needed to enjoy this island of diverse ecology, authentic culture, and LOHAS life. It is pretty convenient to get to the island, too.

Qalang Smangus
Known as the "Black Village," Simakusi is situated in a misty mountain area about 1,600 meters above sea level on Taiwan's Northeast Coast. Although the area around the village is quite developed, a two-hour walk takes one away from civilization and into an old-growth forest. There are several giant Formosan red false cypress trees here, the largest of which ranks among the ten largest recorded in Taiwan. This arboreal giant is known as the "Grandfather Tree" by the people of Simakusi. Resembling the Chinese character for "person" (「人」), the divine tree measure 20.5 meters in circumference, rises 35 meters and is about 2,500 years old.

Taipei Baoan Temple
Located at the confluence of the Tamsui and Keelung rivers, DaLong Cave (Longdong) developed very early. The center of worship here is Bao-an Temple, built in 1825. This is a large temple, and its construction was different; in addition, all of the wood and stone materials—and even the artisans—had to be brought over from mainland China. For these reason, the temple required a full quarter-century to complete.
This temple features the usual dragon pillars, and also a pair of stone lion that are not so usual. Normally, of the two lions (one male, one female) that guard a temple, the male has an open mouth and the female a closed mouth; here, however, both have open mouths. It is said that they are not lions at all but a "humane beast" and a "law beast," stationed there as an appeal to respect the law and carry out good government.

Sisinan Village
At a corner in Taipei's high-end Xinyi District, a few low-rise houses sit closely together. These somewhat crowded buildings chronicled the tears and joy of veterans who migrated to Taiwan in the early days. This is the former site of Taipei City's Military Dependents' Village, called the “Sisinan Village”.
The Hall consists of four symmetrical buildings. The houses that sat tightly next to each other have been converted into an open space for events and exhibitions. The premise now consists of an exhibition hall, Military Dependents’ Village Exhibition Hall, performance hall and community hall. The exterior still retains the unique low-rise and the simple, rustic style of the Military Dependents’ Village. The narrow alleys and footpaths will take the visitors down memory lane. It is a fascinating contrast to the neighboring towering Taipei 101 and surrounding modern buildings, a compelling testimony of Taipei’s urban development.
